SparkLeadership: A Conversation with Leaders Making Black History

Black civic leadership has been integral to every advancement towards equity in this country. SparkLeadership is dedicated to supporting Black candidates in becoming political leaders that continue creating this paradigm-shifting legacy for our communities.

On February 22, 2021 we hosted a conversation with Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY8)facilitated by former U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. John B. King, Jr.. We had the opportunity to hear what this work has looked like for them and gain actionable takeaways for our own leadership journeys.

The conversation with these living legends was Black history in the making, and we are so heartened by their personal testimonies. As the entire country commemorates Black History Month, we were afforded the opportunity to reflect on the ways in which Black leaders have shown up and made a difference for many of our communities; and we discussed strategies to build a future filled with more diverse civic and political, values-based leaders.

We hope you were able to join our celebration of Black leadership. Together with this inspiring panel of speakers, we encourage you to remain committed to supporting and investing in people with direct experience with inequity. They are crucial, powerful change agents in the political process.
