Getting Experience In Policy, Advocacy, & Organizing

How can I get experience working in policy and advocacy?

  • Talk to your coach who can connect you with alumni currently serving as policy and advocacy leaders.
  • Consider applying for one of LEE’s fellowships to help you gain on-the-ground experience.
  • If you are interested in working on Capitol Hill and live in the District of Columbia, get familiar with the workings of Congress by attending public hearings and bill markups and watching activity on the House or Senate floor (either live or via online recordings). Find out when hearings and markups are taking place. Get a gallery pass to watch floor activity by requesting it from the office of a Member of Congress who represents your state/district.
  • If you are interested in working for an elected official, consider working or volunteering for their campaign or in their district or district office.
  • Inquire about volunteer opportunities with local policy and advocacy organizations.

How can I get experience working in organizing?
