About the Course

Transitioning to a Career in Policy or Advocacy draws from LEE’s extensive research and experience helping members make a successful transition to a career in policy and advocacy, as well as Elwood Holton III and Sharon S. Naquin’s work, So You’re New Again: How to Succeed When You Change Jobs.

During this course, you will:

Learn strategies to better understand, navigate and thrive in a a new work culture or environment
Develop approaches and tactics that will help you build resilience
Deepen your understanding of the pace of policy change compared to classroom-level decision-making

Who Should Enroll

This course is strongly recommended for LEE members who:

Are transitioning directly out of the classroom
Have not previously held a full-time, office-based position
Are very early in their policy or advocacy career

What to Expect

Before transitioning into a policy or advocacy career it is important to understand how public policy decisions are made, how the process may not match expectations, and how that gap in expectations can potentially lead to frustration and even burnout. You will learn to effectively navigate the phases of the New Employee Process: Initiation, Transition, Adaptation, as well as strategies to build resilience as you settle into your new role. You’ll also have opportunities to process and reflect on the concepts, and share your takeaways with course instructors and other LEE members.
