Happy Black History Month! Every February, we spend additional time to reflect, learn, honor, and send gratitude towards the countless Black changemakers who have shaped our society with their numerous achievements and stories.
As we muse on their amazing legacies, let us all remember that their impact and inspiration can resonate beyond just one month. Let it empower you to create a continuous civic call to action that influences the upward path of your community. Today, we recognize that we can honor history while also supporting the future.
Be a Changemaker for Black History Month
The change we seek must be a continuous and collective journey. We are moved by the stories of notable Black leaders like Shirley Chisholm, Bayard Rustin, Ruby Bridges, Medgar Evers, and Dorothy Height. These women and many others were adamant on challenging societal narratives, understanding that doing so was a feat achieved through unity, courage, and constant effort. Here are four ways you can make a meaningful impact during Black History Month (and beyond!):
This month is the perfect time to support the amplification of Black voices. We encourage you to follow LEE on Facebook and Instagram, and read our blog to stay updated on the Black leaders making positive moves in their communities. Follow their journey more closely on their own digital spaces and take the time to actively seek out the Black thought leaders in your community, workplace, or industry. Support them and share their work so their voices can lead the conversation.
When Black voices are uplifted, they have the power to inspire change, advance equity, challenge systemic issues, and create a more inclusive society.
If you are in a position to do so, donating to causes that directly support Black communities is one of the most impactful ways to make a difference. Countless organizations are working tirelessly to dismantle racial injustice, provide educational resources, amend policies, and support Black businesses.
LEE is also proud to support several organizations for Black History Month through Spark Leaders. These are the organizations that are leading change for Black communities:
Equity in Education:
Empowering Black Families & Communities:
Justice & Advocacy:
Black Women Leading Change:
By giving to these causes, you are helping to lift up the very people and communities that have been disproportionately affected by systemic racism. Your contribution can make a real, tangible difference in the fight for racial equity.
You can also donate your time, your skills, or your network to support these causes. Whether it's volunteering with local community groups, offering pro bono services to Black-led initiatives, or using your platform to raise awareness, every action counts.
Supporting Black-owned businesses is a powerful way to contribute to economic equity for historically marginalized communities. For too long, Black entrepreneurs in this country have faced countless barriers that have prevented them from accessing the resources and opportunities they need to keep their businesses afloat.
When we actively choose to buy from a Black-owned business, you’re supporting the business owners and you’re investing in communities that have been historically ignored. Many Black-owned businesses are deeply connected to their communities, and they often provide jobs and services, along with initiatives that directly impact those around them. Continue to break down those economic barriers and perpetuate equity by supporting Black-owned businesses.
Education is the cornerstone of progress. The more we know about the history and lived experiences of the Black community, the better equipped we are to combat racism and inequity. Black History Month offers a unique opportunity to know the stories, struggles, and triumphs that society has often overlooked.
When we acknowledge the stories, we can begin to have open and honest conversations about race. Talking to friends, colleagues, and loved ones about racial injustice, privilege, systemic oppression challenges old assumptions and we can confront our biases head-on. This discourse helps us all move closer to understanding and healing. Continuing the discussion about the ongoing struggles that the Black community still faces, we cultivate empathy and a shared responsibility to work toward advancing equity.
Moving Forward
As we honor Black History Month, let’s remember that this is just the beginning. The lessons we learn, the conversations we have, and the actions we take must continue long after February has passed. By elevating Black voices, educating ourselves, supporting Black businesses, and donating to causes that matter, we are helping to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable world.
